What is Vein Treatment
Diagnosis And Treatment In A Single Visit
Vein treatment refers to a range of modern, minimally invasive procedures that work by closing off or destroying damaged veins, causing them to collapse and gradually be absorbed by the body. Blood naturally reroutes to nearby healthy veins, improving circulation and relieving symptoms.
At our Melbourne vein clinic, every patient receives a personalised care plan that includes a thorough consultation, diagnostic ultrasound, targeted treatment, and follow-up. We use the latest techniques, including sclerotherapy, endovenous thermal ablation, and vascular laser, to deliver outstanding results without the need for surgery, general anaesthesia, or hospital admission.
- No surgery required. Every procedure is minimally invasive.
- We only use local anaesthetic— no general anaesthesia used
- Same-day return to normal activity for most patients
- We use duplex ultrasound to diagnose all conditions before treatment
- We are recognised by the Australasian College of Phlebology
- Minimally invasive
Varicose Veins
Advanced treatments for bulging, dilated veins that may cause pain and discomfort.
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most commonly appear in the legs, often causing aching, heaviness, and visible bulging. At our Melbourne leg vein clinic, our doctors commonly use sclerotherapy or endovenous thermal ablation to close the affected veins and restore comfort and confidence.
- Cosmetic & medical
Spider Veins
Cosmetic treatment for small, thread-like veins visible on the skin surface.
Spider veins are clusters of small, dilated blood vessels visible close to the skin’s surface, commonly appearing on the legs and face. Our vein doctors in Melbourne offer targeted vein removal using sclerotherapy or vascular laser, providing a safe and effective treatment.
- Specialised care
Venous Ulcers
Specialised care for chronic wounds caused by venous insufficiency.
Venous ulcers are chronic wounds, typically around the lower leg or ankle, caused by sustained pressure from underlying venous insufficiency. Our team addresses the root cause through ultrasound-guided assessment and appropriate venous treatment, supporting wound healing and significantly reducing the risk of recurrence.
- Symptomatic relief
Leg Swelling & Aches
Treatment for oedema and fluid retention in the lower extremities from venous pathology.
Persistent leg swelling, heaviness, and aching are common signs of venous disease. Our team investigates the venous and vascular causes through a comprehensive assessment, recommending targeted treatments to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life.
- Cosmetic & medical
Venous Pigmentation
Addressing skin discolouration caused by chronic venous insufficiency.
Venous pigmentation presents as brownish skin discolouration around the lower legs, caused by the leakage of red blood cells from poorly functioning veins. Treatment focuses on correcting the underlying venous insufficiency through sclerotherapy or thermal ablation at our Melbourne vein centre, helping to prevent further discolouration and improve the skin’s appearance over time.
- Cosmetic & medical
DVT Management
Fast, specialised help to manage and treat deep vein thrombosis.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) requires prompt and expert assessment to prevent serious complications. Our specialists provide on-site duplex ultrasound assessment and evidence-based DVT management, giving patients fast access to accurate diagnosis and an appropriate, medically supervised treatment plan.
- Cosmetic & medical
Facial Veins & Redness
Targeted treatment for visible facial veins, persistent redness and rosacea-related flushing.
Facial veins, broken capillaries, and diffuse redness can affect confidence and appearance. We use precision vascular laser therapy to target and reduce unwanted facial vessels with minimal discomfort, delivering clearer, more even-toned skin in a safe clinical environment at our Melbourne vein clinic.

6 Ways We Manage Leg Vein Treatment in our Melbourne Clinics
Endovenous Laser Ablation
EVLA · First-line trunk closure
A thin laser fibre seals an incompetent saphenous vein under ultrasound guidance. Our first-line treatment, with 94–98% occlusion rates at 12 months.
30–60 min
per leg
1 session
typical
Radiofrequency Ablation
RFA · Less bruising option
Controlled radiofrequency energy seals the vein in 7 cm segments at 120°C. Outcomes similar to EVLA; some patients report slightly less bruising.
30–60 min
per leg
1 session
typical
Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy
UGS · Deeper tributary veins
Foam sclerosant injected under real-time ultrasound closes deeper tributary veins and residual reflux after trunk treatment. No anaesthetic needed.
20–40 min
per leg
1–3 sessions
typical
Microsclerotherapy
Gold standard for spider veins
A 30-gauge needle injects sclerosant directly into each spider vein. The vessel hardens and fades over 4 to 8 weeks. No anaesthetic required.
20–30 min
per leg
2–4 sessions
typical
Ambulatory Phlebectomy
Keyhole vein removal
Bulging varicose veins removed through 1 mm keyhole openings that heal as faint dots — no stitches needed. Often combined with EVLA or RFA.
45–90 min
per leg
1 session
typical
VenaSeal (Vein Glue)
Non-thermal, no compression
Medical-grade adhesive seals the saphenous vein. No heat, no tumescent anaesthesia, and most patients skip compression stockings entirely.
20–40 min
per leg
Immediate return
typical

Recovery differs slightly by procedure. Some bruising can be expected with some treatments. We provide tailored recovery advice to every patient. Some easy tips to help recovery include:
Your first-week checklist
- You can return to your normal daily activities immediately
- Avoid strenuous exercise on the legs for 1 week
- Skip hot baths and saunas for the first 7 days
- Keep your compression stockings on as directed

Questions, answered
Quick answers to the most common questions we get asked during consultations. Don't see yours? Give us a call — we're happy to talk it through.
What causes varicose veins?
Varicose veins occur when the one-way valves inside leg veins fail to close properly, allowing blood to pool instead of flowing back to the heart. This increases pressure in the superficial veins, causing them to enlarge and twist. Contributing factors include genetics, prolonged standing, heavy exercise, increasing age, pregnancy and being female.
Are vein treatments painful?
Modern vein treatments in Melbourne are designed to minimise discomfort. Local anaesthetic is used for endovenous procedures, and most patients describe the sensation as mild pressure rather than pain. Sclerotherapy and microsclerotherapy use very fine needles and are typically well tolerated. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually sufficient for any post-procedure soreness.
How long does vein treatment take?
Most sessions at our Melbourne vein centre take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent of treatment required.
How long does recovery take?
After treatment, most patients return to regular activity the same day. You will be asked to avoid heavy leg exercise (running, gym, squatting) for one week, but walking is encouraged immediately and is part of the recovery.
Will Medicare cover vein treatments?
Many treatments have Medicare rebates, except when the treatment is purely cosmetic. We will explain exactly which items qualify for a rebate (and the out-of-pocket cost) before any procedure is booked.
Do I need a referral?
While a referral is useful for liaising with your GP, it is not required for consultations or treatments at our clinic.
Do I need to go to hospital?
No. All of our treatments and procedures can be performed as walk-in, walk-out procedures in our clinic, under local anaesthetic. There is no hospital admission and no general anaesthetic.
Can varicose veins come back after vein removal?
Melbourne varicose vein removal treatments deliver long-lasting results, but new veins can develop over time due to genetics or lifestyle factors. Regular follow-ups help monitor and manage any changes, keeping your legs healthy in the long term.
How soon after pregnancy can I have vein treatment?
Our Melbourne and Kew East vein doctors recommend waiting at least three months after delivery before pursuing vein treatment, allowing hormones to stabilise and some veins to resolve naturally. Breastfeeding mothers can have vein treatments, but are advised to discard breast milk for the first 24 hours following each procedure.
Can spider veins be treated on their own, or do the deeper veins need treatment too?
We assess each patient individually. Spider vein removal can sometimes be treated independently, however our specialists will first check for underlying venous insufficiency, as untreated deeper veins can cause spider veins to recur.
